2. Understand strategies to "bring the outdoors in" and/or "bring the indoors out" to make the building and landscape compatible with -- even an extension of -- each other.
3. Understand how the process of cross-discipline collaboration can result in strong examples of spatially-integrated design.

The Fresh, New NY Public Plazas

via Brian E. Bainnson, ASLA Trustee

Are you thinking about attending the upcoming charrette on June 14?  Take a look at the article from the New York Times on the vibrant parklets that are popping up in New York.  If you have any doubt that parklet design is not relevant in today's world, read on.  Here are a few clips from the full article;

"As more and more educated Americans, especially younger ones, are looking to move downtown, seeking alternatives to suburbs and cars, they’re reframing the demand for public space. They want elbow room and creative sites, cooked up by the community or, like the plaza program, developed from a democratic mix of top-down and bottom-up governance."

"And guess what? A beer garden made out of freight containers on an empty plot turns out to be a lot more popular and better for a city than a sad corporate atrium with a few cafe tables and a long list of don’ts on the wall."

"The plazas outside his building are mobbed on warm days, with people even toting Shake Shack burgers out of the park to sit next to all the traffic — partly for the view (the Flatiron building one way, the Empire State Building the other) but also for the reason people gravitate to Trafalgar Square in London or the Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy.

To be in the middle of things."

THICKET Kickoff Recap

via the ASLA Oregon Chapter Emerging Professionals Committee

The ASLA Oregon Emerging Professionals Committee is pleased to announce the launch of our NEW "Last Thursday" Social Hour Series for the entire ASLA Community!

THE THICKET
The White Owl Social Club, ASLA's monthly "Last Thursday" Happy Hour destination, is currently underway with modifications and additions to their outdoor patio space - with the help from the ASLA Oregon Emerging Professionals!

Social Hours #1 and #2 included an all-hands-on-deck "think-tank" design charrette approach to provide design alternatives for the White Owl's up and coming outdoor music venue and patio.

Our May 30th social hour (#3) focused on networking with like-minded emerging professionals and peers as well as gauging interest in EP Committee volunteer support and kicking off LARE study-buddy groups, not to mention taking note of construction progress on the new patio construction!

The THICKET is a great (and FUN) opportunity to get involved with ASLA Oregon Chapter and all are welcome and encouraged to attend! See you at our next Last Thursday THICKET Event!

MARCH 28 - DESIGN CHARRETTE #1
The first "Last Thursday Thicket" kicked off with a lively charrette at the White Owl in SE Portland. Landscape designers and landscape architects from all parts of the professional spectrum - students to seasoned practitioners - participated in our kickoff envisioning session that included a site walk and goals discussion with the owners of the White Owl. Base map underlays, trace, pens/pencils, IPA's and appetizers were provided to participants and the ideas started flowing. As the evening wrapped up, a PechaKucha-like presentation round flooded owners of the White Owl with ideas for their new patio space.

APRIL 25, 2013 - DESIGN CHARRETTE #2
At THICKET #02 the ASLA Emerging Professionals gathered around the White Owl's outdoor patio, already under construction at this point, to continue sketching over trace with complimentary refreshments. Our first monthly gathering, dubbed “The Thicket”, saw a strong showing and the second was no exception, bringing in approximately two dozen participants.

The happy hour destination is called the White Owl Social Club, just a quick hop to the east side industrial neighborhood. The owners generously provided drinks and snacks in return for an energetic charrette to design the best new patio in Portland.

This was the second occurrence of the monthly happy hour and we had another great turn out! Signs of outdoor construction greeted us upon arrival. The owners are wasting no time putting our ideas from late March’s “Phase I” charrette into action.

Our April gathering generated ideas for “Phase II” of the design, which focuses on flexible outdoor space – think moveable planters, seats, etc. It was a great excuse to soak up sunshine and visit with friends, both old and new. The owners were once again incredibly appreciative of the many creative ideas we provided.

We sure hope to see you at our next Thicket event! It’s a relaxing opportunity to reconnect with friends in the design community and help a grateful local business transform their space!

MAY 30, 2013 - SOCIAL HOUR
The THICKET #3 offered a chance for participants to meet and chat with the ASLA Oregon Chapter Communications and Education Chairs, Chapter Student Liaison and Incoming Chapter President. A sign-in sheet was circulated, gauging support for future interest in LARE study-buddy groups as well as a call for volunteer support for the Education and Communications Committees. Those in attendance also got to see a sneak peak of the White Owl's Patio construction progress!

The ASLA Oregon Emerging Professionals Committee extends special thanks to our monthly THICKET host, the White Owl Social ClubSwing by and witness Portland's next big outdoor patio venue taking form, and join us at our next Last Thursday Event!

The THICKET is organized by the ASLA Oregon Chapter Emerging Professionals Committee as a way for professionals – both new and seasoned – to keep connections strong among our design community. Please contact the ASLA Oregon Chapter Communications Chair with questions or for more information.

Green Roofs 2.0 Event Recap

via the ASLA Oregon Mt. Hood Chapter Section Chairs

May 16, 2013 - URBAN GREEN’S Green Roofs 2.0 Event Recap

You never pay attention to what is happening on the roofs above your head as you walk through the Pearl. You may notice a nice corner plaza or a shady canopy of street trees, but a huge area of our urban “ground plane” is taken up by (ironically) roof space. This has stormwater implications as well as being an enormous opportunity for augmenting urban greenspace.

Green Roofs 2.0, the second event in our ASLA Oregon Urban Green Series, got 15 landscape architects up on the Asa and Janey apartment buildings in the Pearl to talk about what is working, lessons learned, and what is in the pipeline for green roof technology in Portland.

The tour, led by Matt Burlin at the City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), started by surveying four roofs from the vantage point from the Asa. It’s not just about intensive and extensive anymore. It’s about utilitarian amenities (a “doggie toilet” green complete with a red hydrant), communal space (fire pits, BBQs, and garden plots), technology and energy production (solar arrays above sedum fields), new products (seeded soil tiles), and (for the cynical) a stellar marketing tool for developers. As Marcus Lima from GBD Architects, the firm that designed the Janey explained, most residents in the Pearl live in the sky. They interact with the environment often through viewsheds. It’s not just about views of Mount Hood. Creating planes of green along urban blocks forms a horizontal and layered urban vista. The Janey green roof, designed by Lango Hansen Landscape Architects, has received acclaim from neighbors in the Casey Apartments across the street.

Matt Burlin’s specific focus is the stormwater benefits of green roofs. He explained that although the City’s incentive program for green roofs is no longer available due to sweeping budget cuts, the office remains a resource and outreach center, helping developers realize the variety of options and the cost benefits of green roofs. The landscape architects working at the BES have been pioneering green roof technologies since the beginning, sometimes starting on their own residential roof spaces. For example, the use of red cinder rock started as an idea tested on one employee’s roof. It proved to helping retain water on the green roof. It has since been tested on a larger scale and shown to eliminate the need for irrigation on extensive, sedum covered green roofs. This dramatically reduces costs, as well as solving for one of the bigger issues of green roof viability and sustainability – how to deal with water (both too much and too little).

Code Red
By Rebecca Wahlstrom

I got lost recently, not a panicky lost, but more like a ‘where does this road go’ kind of lost. Getting lost was my own doing as I sometimes like hop off the well-known route and see something new. On this particular evening the traffic had been kind, so I was whiling away 15 minutes (by driving around some more) before I had to be at a particular place. With each turn from the main arterial the roads narrowed and the trees crept closer, almost protecting the road and me from the bright sunshine. No sidewalks were to be seen and I don’t think there was even a centerline to the road. A child, working with her dad out in the garden, felt I was driving too fast so she held up her hand and told me to slow down in a ‘you shall not pass!’ sort of way. It was delightful.

I’m not advocating that we should throw out building codes, because codes do protect the public from people who don’t care two sticks about creating something safe or good for the neighborhood, but I do believe we have lost some of the charm of place by adhering so devotedly to what is allowed and not allowed. What I enjoyed most on my short exploration of this untamed part of Portland was the feeling that people really cared about their neighborhood. They were making an effort to make it a good place to live and a part of their lives, much like when people build book-share boxes, have a yearly neighborhood parade, or paint art on their road intersections. All this started me thinking, how does one make a neighborhood a community? During design and construction phases, developers and municipalities push and pull between the desire for good profits and following the code, but where does the community-making come into the process? The end result is a neighborhood appearing in a few short months with the regulation open-spaces, setbacks, and sidewalk widths. All it needs after completion is people...  without adding people all one will have built is a parking lot for nice buildings.

People are the key to community. It’s not a total revelation, but one that matters a great deal. If people are sequestered in their buildings, they can’t meet with their neighbors and they will not build a community. In this Year of Public Service, let’s remember the people in our design and figure out how we can both keep them safe through use of code and provide a good framework for community building.

Story Telling - LANDbytes Article

ASLA Oregon LANDbytes MAY 2013 Feature:

Story Telling
By Rebecca Wahlstrom

Bill Moyers had Marshall Ganz on his show the other week, talking about generating community involvement and action towards a positive change. Marshall Ganz, besides being a senior lecturer in public policy at Harvard, is most recently known for organizing the grassroots campaign for President Obama in 2008. Before that, he spent his formative years working for change on the civil and farm-worker rights front-all leading to the point that Mr. Ganz knows a thing or two about enabling people to find their voice and make a change. In this Year of Public Service, the ASLA is encouraging landscape architects to make a difference in their region. Public projects can be a wonderful thing for a community, but they can also become an albatross around their necks if not done with thoughtful research.

One way to create relevant spaces is to encourage community members to tell their story during the design phase.  By having the residents tell their story, a part of their lives will become visible in the design, and the project will more likely become part of community as they see themselves represented.  Mr. Ganz outlined three crucial parts to a compelling public story; a story of self, a story of us, and a story of now. As landscape architects, we need to be good story-tellers. Not only do we need to know why we were motivated to pursue landscape architecture and how to explain our profession, we need to know how it all makes a difference to our community (self/us/now). We need to be able to tell other people’s stories and represent them in the landscape.

Not an easy task, to be sure. Like opening Pandora’s Box, one never knows what is going to happen when you begin asking for other people’s tales. By asking well-chosen questions, the stories that emerge from community meetings and conversations can start to shape the new public space. Mr. Ganz was thinking about political activism when he laid out the self/us/now structure, but I think it makes a good fit for landscape architecture. Creating public space is a sort of activism as one is changing so many lives when a new project is completed.  The place and its people will never be quite the same after the designers and construction crews have rolled up their plans and walked away.  It is up to us to represent the design community, to make sure that in the ASLA Year of Public Service we serve the public in a way that makes a lasting and positive change.

THE THICKET
A Monthly Social Hour

May 30th, 6:00 - 8:00pm
The White Owl Social Club
1305 SE 8th Ave, Portland, OR 97214

The White Owl Social Club, ASLA's monthly "Last Thursday" Happy Hour destination, is currently underway with modifications and additions to their outdoor patio space - with the help from the ASLA Oregon Emerging Professionals!

Social Hours #1 and #2 included an all-hands-on-deck "think-tank" design charrette approach to provide design alternatives for the White Owl's up and coming outdoor music venue and patio.

Our May 30th social hour (#3) will focus on networking with like-minded emerging professionals and peers as well as gauging interest in EP Committee volunteer support and kicking off LARE study-buddy groups. Join us as we kick back and relax over appetizers and a cold one - and take a peek at patio construction progress. This is a great (and FUN) opportunity to get involved with ASLA Oregon Chapter - all are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Julie Bargmann Lecture

via Karen O'Donnell Stein, Communications & Student Services Coordinator
Portland State University School of Architecture

"Placing," School of Architecture Lecture Series:
Julie Bargmann, "Working Traces"
Thursday, May 2, 2013 - 6:00pm

“Architects create places, not spaces.” In the second annual lecture series presented by the School of Architecture at Portland State University, six internationally renowned leaders from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, art, planning and anthropology will tackle this once-controversial idea. The series spans the 2012-2013 academic year, with presentations by Dan Wood, Sheila O’Donnell and John Tuomey, Kevin Daly, Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, Tim Ingold and Julie Bargmann. Each of these speakers will discuss the ways in which the active processes of siting, locating, positioning and placing things and people in the world are conceived and embodied in their work.

Landscape architect Julie Bargmann will speak as part of the "Placing" lecture series on Thursday, May 2, 2013, giving a lecture titled "Working Traces."

"Evidence of multiple-site histories lurks beneath urban expanses of asphalt and weeds. To reframe vacant land as full becomes the primary act of design, unearthing the embodied energy of men, women, and children who once labored there. Working with these traces makes places within a renewed landscape of ecological and cultural production," writes Bargmann.

Julie Bargmann is an innovative designer of regenerative landscapes and founder and principal of D.I.R.T. Studio ("Dump It Right There"). Based in New York City, she is also Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, where she leads venturesome investigations with students into derelict terrain, imagining renewed sites of cultural and ecological production. Her work has received numerous awards and has been featured in art and design exhibitions worldwide.
