Public Service Opportunity for LA's

Public Service Opportunity for Landscape Architects

via Gregg S. Everhart, ASLA

Remember plant identification class? Want to brush up on your tree id skills? Meet some neighbors? See more diversity of trees than you might usually specify in a planting plan? Please consider signing up as a “team leader” as three Portland neighborhoods inventory their street trees. While I am most interested in my neighborhood, Sunnyside (SE Hawthorne to Stark between 28th and 49th Streets) and hope you might join us here, Hosford Abernethy and NW Portland neighborhoods are also participating in this Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry Division program.

Each neighborhood will have four Saturday morning inventory work days. Pairs of volunteers will each be assigned several blocks to inventory. While anyone can be a data collector, we really need people that can identify at least some of the trees. There will be certified arborists on bikes to help with any uncertainties!

Team Leaders must attend a training session and commit to participate in three inventory work days. Training is offered on Saturday, June 23, at SE Uplift at 3534 SE Main St. Sign up for one session, either 8:30 AM-noon or 1:00-4:30 PM. Register online at http://portlandonline.com/parks/treeinventory.

Inventory work days will be held on Saturdays from 8:30 am to noon from June through September. Use the same link to register for specific days. If possible, add that you are a landscape architect in the comments so I can get a sense of how many participate.

The True Value of Landscape Architecture

ASLA Oregon LANDbytes APRIL 2012 Feature:

The True Value of Landscape Architecture
By Meika Jensen - meika.jensen1@gmail.com

Landscape architecture, once an underappreciated job concerned with little more than plant placement, has grown to become one of the hottest up-and-coming careers. Students at Harvard, those in online Masters degree programs and even mid-career job training are devoted to increasing knowledge of landscape architecture.

Experts in the landscape architecture field combine knowledge of horticulture and general ecology with land use, planning, and aesthetic concerns. They plan gardens and public parks, but also advise builders on terrain characteristics; help land owners use plants efficiently; and look for ways of harnessing natural energy to conserve and preserve in almost any setting. In part due to landscape architecture’s overlap with environmental science and sustainability, undergraduate students are majoring in landscape architecture programs in greater numbers than ever before. The promise of robust job prospects in a sagging economy also helps the major’s popularity.

“Employment of landscape architects is projected to grow 16 percent from 2010 to 2020,” the United State Bureau of Labor Statistics says in its most recent Occupational Outlook Handbook. “Planning and development of new construction and redevelopment of existing buildings will drive employment growth. With land costs rising and the public’s desire for more beautiful and functional spaces, the importance of good site planning and landscape design is expected to grow.”

Interest is not simply from the industry side; universities across the country are seeing a rise in students choosing landscape architecture as a major. According to the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture, the number of students pursuing undergraduate degrees in landscape architecture rose 20 percent in the brief window between 2008 and 2010. “As shown by the profession’s exponential growth, landscape architecture has become more accepted and understood by society,” CELA said on its “Academic Information System” portal. “The growing number of programs has changed not only the professional and educational fields, but also the way information is perceived and disseminated into society and among the academic community.”

One of the biggest changes in the field is the focus on sustainable and “green” planning. The role of the modern landscape architect is about far more than choosing plants and arranging outdoor areas. Experts examine land use, energy conservation, and ecological balance. Many enter into urban planning careers where they look for ways of preserving historic buildings, updating neighborhoods, and integrating energy-saving measures like rooftop gardens into city spaces.

“College-bound students are increasingly interested in sustainability issues,” Robert Franek, Vice President of Publishing at the Princeton Review, said at the release of the Princeton Review’s Spring 2011 “College Hopes and Worries” survey. This interest, paired with a growing demand for environmentally focused landscape architecture expertise, has led to a veritable explosion of landscape architecture programs across many campuses.

The landscape architecture major tends to be a bit longer than the standard four-year degree—most students take five years to complete the course and earn their certification. Most states require that budding landscape architects have a full year of work experience before entering the field as full-fledged professionals, which is usually where the extra year comes in. Schools match students with mid-semester jobs, summer internships, or on going co-op work opportunities, all of which can be completed before graduation and under the close mentorship of professors.

Most schools also incorporate a mandatory semester study-abroad program to widen students’ horizons. “Studying off-campus offers students the opportunity to experience architecture in different areas of the world, on all types of scales,” the Clemson University College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities says on its Landscape Architecture page. Seeing first-hand how other cities, cultures, and countries are using their spaces in a sustainable way can give students new perspectives, and can influence their strategies once they are in practice in their own right.

Pine Nursery Garden Design Charrette

ASLA Oregon LANDbytes APRIL 2012 Feature:

Bend Pine Nursery Community Garden Design Charrette
By Robin Gyorgyfalvy, ASLA Oregon Public Awareness Advocate

Spring has returned to the east side of the Cascades and the Understory is beginning to unveil its continuing story. Last August, the 08.17.11 Understory event in Bend was a design charrette for Alford Acres. The goal of the design charrette was to persuade Habitat for Humanity to include a community garden open space within their proposed Alford Acres housing development as a place for residents to garden and raise food for Common Table, a non-profit cafe designed to feed all people. This purposeful event was one of many in Oregon and across the country that would collectively launch ASLA's National Public Awareness Campaign and tell the world what landscape architects do and how they create healthy and livable public spaces.

In Bend, the 08.17.11 Understory event brought together landscape architects, artists, master gardeners, permaculturists, the Food Policy Council, the Green Building Institute for Sustainability, Habitat for Humanity, Bend 2030 Community Vision, and specialists whose sole focus was the design of beautiful and productive agricultural community gardens. A wave of growing interest and establishment of community gardens is rapidly sweeping across Central Oregon. The enthusiasm and genuine interest of the design charrette participants has been reflected in their willingness to share their knowledge and expertise on this growing trend of developing community gardens.

Due to the momentum generated by the new collaborative interests from the Alford Acres design charrette, another community garden design charrette was held on April 12, 2012. This special event was hosted and organized by Deschutes National Forest employees Thom Hittlet, USDA People's Garden Representative and Robin Gyorgyfalvy, ASLA Oregon Public Awareness Advocate. The selected site was the Bend Pine Nursery Park adjacent to the Deschutes National Forest office building. It was a unique opportunity during National Landscape Architecture Month to spotlight the design talents of landscape architects Chelsea Schneider, Marlys Underwood (Chapter President) and Eileen Obermiller of the High Desert Oregon ASLA Chapter.

Once again, the collective efforts of landscape architects, master gardeners, permaculturists, botanists, Food Policy Council planners, garden designers, and forestry specialists created community garden conceptual designs. In addition to being functional gardening places, a lot of thought was put into the educational value of an outdoor place to grow food in such a challenging high desert environment. As much emphasis was placed upon aesthetics and creating a welcoming and enjoyable community space with central gathering areas under shaded trellises and whimsical art and water features and play areas for all ages. Master Gardener Linda Denall captured the spirit of the design charrette when she remarked “It’s amazing how this blank piece of land suddenly came to life and was full of creative energy, growth, and community.”

The continuing momentum from the 08.17.11 Understory to the April 12th design charrette during National Landscape Architecture Month will be showcased to the community on 04.26.12. The High Desert Oregon ASLA Chapter and design charrette participants will be displaying their appetizing community garden designs at coffee shops and various locations in downtown Bend. What a great way to design community gardens, find out more about what landscape architects do in Bend, and celebrate Frederick Law Olmsted's birthday. Let them eat cake indeed as we also celebrate the continuing community garden design conversation in Central Oregon.

South Downtown - Portland

ASLA Oregon LANDbytes APRIL 2012 Feature:

South Downtown - Portland
By Rebecca Wahlstrom

Over the past year I’ve become a danger when driving over Portland’s Marquam bridge; not because I’m texting or juggling fast food, but it’s because I’m trying to see how the construction is going along the waterfront, south of downtown. There is a lot to see. TriMet, OHSU, and Zidell are all busy making the south side of Portland into a bustling part of the city. For years, plans for that area have only existed within master plans or in the heads of designers; now it is finally becoming reality.

TriMet is building Portland’s first bridge in 35 years to span the Willamette, carrying pedestrians, bikers, buses, and the MAX. While current construction looks like it is choking the river into a narrow gap, the final design shows the new cable-stayed bridge soaring lightly across the river. http://trimet.org/pm/construction/bridge.htm

When you do stroll, bike, or ride across this bridge, look down at the shoreline. Instead of the Himalayan blackberries and concrete rubble that used to grace our waterfront, you’ll see more than half a mile of native plants, all planted on a slope that gently bends to the water, losing its old aggressive angle. Joyce Jackson, landscape architect at Maul Foster & Alongi, wrote of this project in August 2011, http://www.aslaoregon.org/updates/articles/the-landscape-architect%27s-role-in-the-zidell-waterfront-cleanup; she provided this update. “We completed the final bank planting in February and we now begin our battle with the geese. They are VERY fond of the newly germinating grasses that we are trying to establish. It is quite a dilemma, combating the wildlife to establish habitat for the wildlife “. Plants are establishing well, though, and the bank restoration has held up in the recent high waters. Through diligence and a little cooperation from the natural world, in a couple years the shoreline will hopefully look as if it has never served as an industrial/shipbuilding area.

OHSU (Oregon Health Sciences University) is building the Schnitzer Campus & OHSU commons, phase one of the 26-acre campus. http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/about/services/cpdre/planning/schnitzer-campus.cfm The campus will nestle between south side of the Marquam bridge and the new TriMet bridge, and serve as a much needed area of expansion for the university. Multiple modes of transportation will serve this part of the campus; MAX, trolley, bike trails, the new TriMet bridge, and the tram all converge to make this part of downtown accessible and well-connected.

All these projects are generating a lot of looking and a lot of excitement about the future of the south waterfront area. The potential of more people moving through and inhabiting this previously ignored part of town is huge. Big changes are afoot; make sure you, as landscape architects, are in touch with how Portland is growing. Next time I drive within sight of the construction area, I promise to keep my eyes on the road…mostly. Seeing this part of Portland’s history is just too exciting to miss.

If You're Happy and You Know It...

ASLA Oregon LANDbytes APRIL 2012 Feature:

If You're Happy and You Know It...
By Rebecca Wahlstrom

You might remember that kids song - maybe you’ve even sang a few rounds of it with the kids currently in your life. It’s a song that immediately induces eye-rolling in some adults at the mere mention of it, but strangely enough, by the end of the clapping and the singing, one does feel a bit happier (or sillier, which is a close second to happy). My point is this; April is National Landscape Architecture Month, when activities happen that showcase what landscape architects do and how we play a part in building healthy and active communities. Asking already busy people to add one more activity to their already busy life might provoke a certain amount of eye-rolling, and one might even be asking who cares or feel like it’s a lost cause. I decided to investigate this line of thinking just a bit by asking some of the organizers of last fall’s Understory events if they saw any lasting effects from their efforts.

The Springfield event, where the folks at the Willamalane Park and Recreation District did an information blast to let their co-workers know what they did, reported good results. Here is what Nicole Ankeney said, “I think the biggest impact is that when people have a better understanding of what you do, they are more comfortable talking to you or asking questions about park projects or even discussing their own personal landscape issues. My department is called planning and development and I think it is very vague to most employees here what we do exactly, so I think the email was an icebreaker that opened up the door for communication. It also helped with perception because coworkers now have a better understanding of how much education and work experience that it takes to become a licensed landscape architect”. Robin Gyorgyfalvy, who headed up the Bend event with Chelsea Schneider, said that the charrette that they led was so successful and connected so many people in their community that they did a follow up event this year (see Robin’s article in this month’s LANDbytes).

These events connected people in ways that hadn’t happened before someone took the effort to reach out. Public outreach can be as simple as an email or poster session at your work, or a more complex endeavor, like a community charrette. Big or small, I think that once you finish the event, you’ll be happy…and you know it.

Happy National Landscape Architecture Month!

TRANSITION PLANNING FOR NEW AND EXITING LEADERS
A Town Hall with Internationally Acclaimed Consultant Hugh Hochberg

As more and more Baby Boomers retire in the Oregon architecture, engineering and construction (A/E/C), transition is becoming an industry norm. With this in mind, SMPS Oregon brings The Coxe Group partner Hugh Hochberg to Oregon for a ‘town hall’ style, interactive presentation on the do’s and don’ts of transition/succession planning.

This event is sponsored by:

Transition planning, also known as succession planning, is all the rage in Oregon’s architecture, engineering and construction (A/E/C) industry.

Firms such as FFA, Lease Crutcher Lewis, and Kennedy-Jenks Consultants have recently negotiated this great abyss with success but there are countless other firms in line behind them.

With this in mind, SMPS Oregon brings The Coxe Group partner Hugh Hochberg to Oregon for a ‘town hall’ style, interactive presentation.

Hochberg, an AIA Handbook of Professional Practice author, and a co-author of McGraw-Hill’s Success Strategies for Design Professionals will tap his 36 years of consulting to an estimated 800 A/E/C clients to provide Oregon Principals, Associates and Marketers with the ingredients of successful transition -- in Hugh’s words “how to make it happen.”

The Coxe Group partner will draw on concepts, case studies, and consulting experiences to provide the audience with real-life examples across a wide spectrum of situations and cultural dynamics.

The aim of the presentation will be to arm today’s and tomorrow’s leaders with the information they need to appropriately position their organizations -- and their careers - for the highest likelihood of success during transition.
Hugh’s “interactive” talk (participation required!) will address the components of transition, including:
• Ownership
• Management
• Governance
• Marketing
• Leadership

Hugh will make it a priority to pay very close attention to ownership – which he says often gets the most attention -- and leadership which, he describes as usually the most challenging and most critical to sustaining success.

Hugh adds that without a successful transition, firms languish and then disappear. He says to expect to walk away from this presentation with clarity about “what’s going well” in your firm in the context of transition and “what needs attention.”

Beer, wine & hors d'oeuvres will be available at this event.

More April Events!

via ASLA Oregon WVS Co-Chairs Arica Duhrkoop-Galas and Justin Lanphear, ASLA

Dear friends and colleagues,
There are quite a few events happening during the month of April that we would like to bring to your attention.

First, and foremost, we would like to encourage you to attend the Oregon ASLA Symposium on April 21. Due to this event falling in the same week we would normally hold our section meeting, we are opting to cancel our meeting in the hope that you will be even more likely to venture up to Portland for this wonderful Saturday happening.

The annual HOPES conference is taking place once again on the University of Oregon campus April 13 & 14, with some very interesting speakers. The theme this year is DIRT. Diana Balmori speaks on April 13 and Walter Hood speaks April 14. See http://hopes.uoregon.edu/ for more information.

Jeff Howe will be speaking at the University of Oregon on April 27 at 4:00 pm. Paula Morgan is scheduled to speak May 25 at noon. More details to follow.

Mid-term studio reviews in Lawrence Hall are scheduled for early May; please contact the UO Department of Landscape Architecture if you would like to offer yourself as a reviewer. Ron Lovinger is teaching a studio on the “butterfly” parking structure within our downtown park blocks, and there might be a different topic to suit your fancy. Remember; hours spent in the classroom can be applied to some of your your PDH requirements.

We are looking forward to better weather this summer and would like to prime you to start thinking about projects tours. What do you want to see? What can you offer? Please keep this in mind as we plow through the next couple of months at warp speed.

ASLA Report to Our Members

via Nancy C. Somerville, Hon. ASLA
Executive Vice President and CEO
American Society of Landscape Architects

American Society of Landscape Architects
Annual 2011: A Report to Our Members

As we dive into what promises to be another very busy year for ASLA, I wanted to take a moment to review our accomplishments in 2011. Despite a very challenging economy that has affected us all, ASLA members and their Society made real progress in raising awareness of the profession and ensuring that the profession’s voice was heard.

On August 17, 1,000 volunteers hit the streets, the parks, and the sidewalks in their communities to share examples of landscape architecture projects and to explain the benefits your work brings to people’s lives. More than 250 events, half of which involved direct, one-on-one discussions, happened almost simultaneously. Collectively, these events generated more than 80 news stories in all media, reaching an estimated 15 million people.

So who says one person can’t make a difference? There are less than 30,000 people employed in the landscape architecture field in a nation of more than 312 million. Yet we were heard, big time. And we’ve only just begun.

Working hand-in-hand with our chapters and their dedicated public-awareness volunteers, we will continue that engagement with activities at the grassroots level supported by resources created by the national office. And this April chapters across the nation will once again celebrate National Landscape Architecture Month, introducing the profession to the public through a series of standalone events while also coordinating a common public outreach on April 26, Frederick Law Olmsted’s birthday.

On the PR and communications side, much of our energy—and creativity—continues to be focused on web communications, because of the ability of the web to reach the largest audience. In 2011, the site attracted 644,000 unique visitors and more than 5 million pageviews, continuing healthy year-to-year growth.

To complement the public awareness materials, we have developed special areas on the site to serve as resources for policy makers, educators, students, and members of the other design and construction industries.

As part of the 08.17.11 events, we launched www.asla.org/design, a basic introduction to the profession as a destination for the curious public. So far, it has received more than 55,000 pageviews.

Designing Our Future: Sustainable Landscapes features 30 case studies and eight animations that detail sustainable landscape design. These resources have attracted more than 370,000 pageviews thus far, and the animations have been viewed an additional 85,000 times.

To establish landscape architects in the forefront of discussions of key issues affecting the profession, we have developed detailed resource centers around topics such as transportation, green infrastructure, and livable communities, as well as corresponding resources for residential projects.

And we continue to leverage The Dirt blog to keep our voice in the mix. The blog is widely read and syndicated, consistently ranks among the top 10 on environmental subjects, and has received some 1.3 million pageviews since relaunch in 2009

These outreach efforts provide a solid foundation to support our equally significant progress on the advocacy front, in spite of the challenging political environment in Washington.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is in the midst of a critical national rulemaking on stormwater. The process started with an EPA-commissioned National Research Council study on the effectiveness of the Agency’s current stormwater program. NRC’s conclusion: Big pipes and grey infrastructure are not going to solve the problem, but green infrastructure and low-impact development can.

To support its rulemaking, EPA asked ASLA to help document the use and effectiveness of green infrastructure approaches. We turned to you, and set an ambitious goal of 300 projects. You responded with 479 case studies, covering 43 states, D.C, and Canada. We provided all that data to EPA, and those case studies are now catalogued and available on the ASLA website. These projects are a compelling demonstration of the value of green infrastructure—and the critical role of landscape architects.

Another priority focus this year has been transportation. With the surface transportation bill coming up for renewal, we are advocating for inclusion of a federal Complete Streets policy in the legislation, along with supporting essential existing programs that support transportation alternatives, enhance community livability, and provide jobs for landscape architects.

Many of these programs came under a barrage of attacks in 2011, especially the transportation enhancements program. An example: On October 17, ASLA’s government affairs staff learned of a serious threat: Senator John McCain was preparing to offer an amendment to a fiscal year 2012 spending bill to gut the transportation enhancements program.

Since McCain did not include bicycle and trail projects on his hit list, many of our usual coalition partners opted not to challenge the proposal. So ASLA took the lead. We prepared a letter in opposition, got 12 other organizations to sign on, and put the letter into the hands of each senator’s chief of staff, legislative director, and transportation legislative assistant. And we sent out a red alert to all of you through our Advocacy Network. You responded. We had the best performance from the Advocacy Network to date, with 655 activists sending 1,338 messages to their senators over the two days preceding the vote.

It worked. The roll-call vote on October 19 was 59 to 39 to table the amendment, essentially killing it.

Your grassroots-level advocacy, combined with our D.C.-based outreach efforts, not only reversed the threat, but also raised ASLA’s profile on Capitol Hill. ASLA was cited by the influential Democratic Policy Committee as an opponent of the amendment, and multiple senate staffers cited ASLA’s opposition and outreach as a major contributing factor to votes against the amendment.

Threats are continuing, and vigilance and quick action are still required. I commend you all for your support of ASLA and your direct involvement in issues of importance to the profession and to the country. It would be easy in such very difficult and stubborn financial times to lose faith and withdraw. That’s not our style, and the relative health of ASLA and the profession is testimony to that, as are such success stories as I’ve just shared.

There’s a lot more I could tell you about, like the changes I hope you’ve been noticing in our fantastic Landscape Architecture Magazine, the second-largest Annual Meeting and largest Expo in ASLA history, and the progress of our Sustainable Sites Initiative partnership. I urge you to stay engaged and help us help you, as you all did so effectively in 2011. Thank you all.

National Landscape Architecture Month!

ASLA Oregon LANDbytes MARCH 2012 Feature:

Get Ready! National Landscape Architecture Month is Coming!
By Rebecca Wahlstrom

April has been set aside by the ASLA as a month when activities happen nationwide to celebrate and promote the profession of landscape architecture. The focus of this month’s activities is “Public Health and Active Living 2012”, showing how we are addressing the major problems of obesity and chronic health problems due to lack of exercise by designing healthy community structures. This topic is a great fit for our active state – what a perfect chance to show people how we promote healthy lifestyles. Are there playgrounds or trail systems where you can show people how landscape architecture has been part of its creation? How about plaza’s where farmers markets happen or places where people wait to catch the MAX or bus? Can you get out there and let people know who designed that space? Now is the time to celebrate all you have done and promote the future of landscape architecture.

You might be asking, “what can I do?” Glad you asked! ASLA has put forward a whole webpage of ideas for activities along with detailed instructions and tips (and has a picture of Portland’s Mt. Tabor Middle School rain garden design). The below is just a sampling of what the website provides on the ‘Career Discovery Activities’ page. http://www.aslaoregon.org/updates/articles/national-landscape-architecture-month.  Boy Scout troops can learn about plants and earn a badge during your time with them; Connect with middle and high-school students and design a rain garden or reading garden; Are you a native plant expert? Visit your local high school and show them how essential native plants are to our landscape.

One doesn’t need to be hampered by this list – create your own activity that will appeal to you and the audience you wish to reach. Back on 8.17.11, the first roll-out of the Understory, the Bend folks led a design charrette, people in Springfield did a workplace information blast to enlighten their co-workers on what their department had accomplished, and Portland canvassed downtown parks. http://www.aslaoregon.org/blog/2011/9/14/dues-increase-effective-january-2012 What will Oregon do this time to celebrate landscape architecture? I believe our fit and active state is primed and ready to show off all that we have done to promote physical activity and public health to the general public and to the nation. Be creative – have fun – and be sure to let people know about landscape architecture in April!
