Architects in Schools is seeking volunteers for the upcoming 09-10 school year program. Consider sharing your passion and professional skills and building ties with your community.
Portland schools are still in need of at least two landscape architects, especially within Washington and/or Clackamas counties.
The Architecture Foundation of Oregon (AFO) coordinates partnerships between landscape architects and area schools. The program is open to grades 3 through 5 and offered to the schools at no charge.
Landscape architect commitment to the program usually totals approximately 20 hours between January and April as follows:
• 12 hours in the classroom (approximately two hours per week over a six-week period that works with the architect’s schedule)
• 8 hours of orientation, including pre-planning time with teachers, and
• Up to 2 additional hours of “floating timeâ€
Program orientation for volunteers will be held around the state:
Portland - Saturday, January 30th, 2010
Bend - Saturday, February 6th, 2010
Salem/Eugene - TBA
The program culminates with exhibits of student work during the month of May. The Portland exhibit opens on First Thursday (May 6, 2010) at the Center for Architecture, Albina Community Bank Gallery and the US Bank Tower lobby with receptions at all locations.
If you are interested in participating in training and volunteer work with area grade schools, contact ASLA Education Chair
