Black Box Exhibit

Described as one of the fathers of modern landscape architecture, Lawrence Halprin continues to demonstrate a seminal influence on landscape architects across the country as he has for decades. City planners, architects, sociologists and artists have also taken interest in his landscape design work and have learned how successful public spaces are created through his examples many urban plazas and parks.

The Black Box Exhibit features 24 original diagrams, sketches and watercolors that reveal his inspiration for his landmark work in Portland that has engaged Portlanders and visitors for over 40 years. One of his most influential and published works include the Portland Open Space Sequence: Lovejoy Fountain, Forecourt Fountain (aka Ira Keller Fountain) and Pettygrove Park. Halprin was also involved in the design of the transit mall as we know it today.        

This Halprin Black Box Exhibit will help educate practitioners and the public of the importance of his work, the appeal of the places he designs and elaborate on his approach to urban space design.

Halprin celebrates 56 years in private practice and continues to break ground across the county. Now 89 years young, Halprin recently completed construction of the Lucas Films Center Campus in San Francisco, Yosemite Park Visitor’s Entry in Yosemite Valley, CA. and Stearn Grove in San Francisco.
