Jury Comments:
“Reframing Northwest Style demonstrated an innovative approach to displaying some of the landscape diversity of our region, making an especially effective use of the Square.”
“The understated elegance and straightforward visual simplicity made this entry immediately appealing. The design seeks to encourage pedestrian participation (and interpretation) with the variety of plant types juxtaposed and the whimsical introduction of the "windowed" views gracefully winding their way through the ordered grid of the city block pattern. Playful and articulate.”

Jury Comments:
“Storm Water utilized the design process to address a critical issue now facing the city of Portland. I was intrigued with its potential as a creative means of engaging citizens in careful thought and action concerning this urgent urban challenge.”
“The storm water entry presented a strong graphic appeal with the radiating bands of blue opening up form the center of the lower plaza. Although the idea of education regarding a very regional topic, the handling of storm water, seems appropriate, the method of illustrating these options seemed a little fragmented. Perhaps with more development the water treatment pieces could be more integrated into the overall layout of the design.”

Jury Comments:
“Regional Spirit captured a sense of place with a perspective that included an appreciation for some of the key defining elements in our regional life.”
“The juxtaposition of the city blocks representing the urban grid contrasted nicely to the linear patterning of the rural agricultural areas. The large canvas mountain provided a strong central focus and pivotal design element symbolizing the importance of nature to this scheme, thus creating an appealing vertical scale to the otherwise low-lying ‘valley’ of urban to rural plantings.”

Jury Comments:
“Intertwining Lives was an imaginative approach to both the design challenges and uses of the Square. I was particularly drawn to the reference of the native basketry traditions and the expansive engagement with the physical architecture of the Square.”
“Using the language of basketry and weaving to create a tapestry of flowers presented a dynamic design idea for the Festival of Flowers competition. The design concept, seemingly based on historic cultural patterning, unfolded into an intriguing display of complex color and form. I thought the fluid motion and vibrancy of the woven overhead gateway installations were the most compelling aspects of this design.”
