In February, a 3-day design charrette for the annual Pioneer Courthouse Square Festival of Flowers display was held involving University of Oregon Landscape Architecture students. Pioneer Courthouse Square affiliates and professional landscape architects in Eugene and Portland juried the charrette, which consisted of a pre-jury on February 21st and a final jury on February 28th. The students were asked to explore ideas of what makes Pacific Northwest Design unique. Forty-two students, including undergraduate and graduates, participated in teams and submitted a total of twelve entries. Four entries were chosen as finalists. These teams had one week to refine their schemes before presenting to the final jury in Portland.
The jury would like to thank all of the participating students for putting so much positive energy and creative thinking into their designs. Because of this, it was very difficult to decide upon a clear winner. “Reframing Northwest Style” by Nathan Hilmer, Nipporn Kichanan, Sean Scully, and Eric Scharnhorst was chosen as the winning entry. The concept for the design “reframes the relationship between our innovative Northwest culture and the lush and creeping environment in which we reside. Using the window as a lens, a traditional, gridded flower garden is refracted into a complex plaid of agricultural, horticultural, and indigenous plants. The resulting juxtapositions of indian corn against impatients and sedge beside sunflower are intended to conflict with expectations and offer a new framework for understanding our environment.”
The Oregon Chapter would like to thank the student participants, members of the jury, Pioneer Courthouse Square, the University of Oregon Landscape Architecture Department, the University of Oregon Portland Center, Walker Macy, Stan Jones, Tara Byler, Justine Lovinger, Roxy Thorne, Amanda Graves, Irene Bowers, Beth Flanagan, P. Annie Kirk, Austin Goodman and Casey Wanlass for helping to make the charrette a success.
