Purpose:  Oregon ASLA is honored to be a part of this year’s Pioneer Courthouse Square Festival of Flowers, a Portland tradition. This is a wonderful opportunity to interface with the general public, a chance to educate people about the importance of landscape architecture in our region and how it contributes to the quality of our everyday environment.

Designed by University of Oregon Landscape Architecture students, this year’s scheme is entitled “Reframing Northwest Style.” The design reframes the relationship between our innovative Northwest culture and the lush and creeping environment in which we reside. Using the window as a lens, a traditional, gridded flower garden is refracted into a complex plaid of agricultural, horticultural, and indigenous plants. The resulting juxtaposition of Indian corn against impatiens and sedge beside sunflowers are intended to conflict with expectations and offer a new framework for understanding our environment.
