On June 17th, 2005 Pioneer Courthouse Square will officially open the Annual Festival of Flowers Celebration. This year’s design titled, “Reframing Northwest Style,” was designed by a team of University of Oregon students from the School of Landscape Architecture. The flowers will be on display through June 30th, 2005 and will be followed by the annual Flower Sale beginning July 1st, 2005.

This year’s design is unique because it was chosen as a result of a design competition held at the University of Oregon School of Landscape Architecture. The design competition was conducted by the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects as part of a 15-month outreach and education project which aims to evoke, reveal, explore and acknowledge “Pacific Northwest Design.”

This year's, “Reframing Northwest Style,” Festival of Flowers design reframes the relationship between our innovative Northwest culture and the lush environment in which we reside.  Using the window as a lens, a traditional, gridded flower garden is refracted into a complex plaid of agricultural, horticultural, and indigenous plants.

“This year’s Festival of Flowers design is spectacular and will be sure to amaze the entire downtown community,” said Jennifer Polver, Executive Director of Pioneer Courthouse Square. “The University of Oregon should be very proud of their talented students who have worked so hard to present this fun and festive flower display to the City of Portland.”

The Festival of Flowers 2005 will remain on display at Pioneer Courthouse Square until Thursday, June 30th, followed by the annual Flower Sale which will begin on Friday, July 1st. The festival will also include exhibits from Portland’s world-class gardens and noontime musical entertainment at the Square followed by performances at Pioneer Place Mall.

The Flower sale will feature many popular plants at low, low prices! 4” pots will sell for $1.00 and will include: lobelia, alyssum, impatiens, salvia, marigolds and many more. 1 gallon pots will sell for $2.00 and will include: sunflowers, corn, tomatoes and many more. There will be discounts on all purchases of a dozen plants or more!
