“The four images used in the Retrospective’s logo are 4”x6” linoleum block prints. This medium was chosen because the block printing process seems particularly suited to making landscape illustrations. While it requires that the image be reduced to its most significant parts - linework and positive and negative space (or color) - the results are still evocative of nature. The hand carving imparts a variable, tactile quality to the linework that feels organic, and the different papers, inks and printing techniques impart a unique combination of textures that recalls the variability of natural forms.
Composing the picture by carving out some forms and not others leaves the image pared to its essentials, but our minds fill in the details to produce a fuller impression. I believe that the imaginative work involved in making this leap creates an intimacy with the subject matter. These iconic Pacific Northwest landscapes certainly deserve no less from all of us.”
