"Revolve or Evolve-Where to Now?" Symposium

The tag line for a local radio station declares, “It’s different here.” A popular bumper sticker demands, “Keep Portland Weird!” Young creative types are moving to the area in droves, and the region, particularly Portland, is heralded as one of the most sought after places to live. How will all this enthusiasm shape the future?

On April 7, 2006 the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects presents, “Revolve or Evolve - Where to Now?” This one-day symposium looks beyond resting on our laurels and explores the question of how do we, as designers, developers, and citizens, keep the Pacific Northwest’s greatest qualities while allowing for economic growth. The symposium will be followed by a day of tours and is the culmination of a larger 15-month project titled, Pacific Northwest Design - a Retrospective.

The symposium will touch on four main topics: Engaging the Future - Social Capital and our Legacy of Community Activism; Economic Development and Sustainable Design; Art and Ecological Restoration; and Designing for People. A diverse group of speakers, many of which reside and/or work in the region, have confirmed participation.

We are delighted to have Mr. Bob Stacey, Executive Director of 1000 Friends of Oregon as our keynote speaker. 1000 Friends is a nonprofit organization with more than 5,000 members statewide, and offices in Portland, Salem, Eugene, Medford and Tumalo (near Bend), working with Oregonians to enhance our quality of life by building livable urban and rural communities, protecting family farms and forests, and conserving natural and scenic areas.

Symposium registration will also include a plated lunch event with a lively panel moderated by OPB Morning Host, April Baer. The panel, titled “Our Stake in Designing Portland’s Future” will specifically address the question, “How do we, as designers, developers, and citizens, preserve the unique qualities of our city and region while allowing for increased population and economic growth?”

Registration will open at 7:30am, with a continental breakfast beginning at 8:00am and speakers promptly at 9:00am. The day will finish a little before 5:00pm. There will be a Happy Hour post event at the World Trade Center 2 Sky Bridge Terrace.

Our target audience is diverse: landscape architects, architects, engineers, artists, industrial designers, planners, developers, educators, writers, historians, visionaries, community advocates, students, city officials, garden enthusiasts and the general public. It is our goal to facilitate a rich discourse throughout the day that contributes viable information and possibilities for the future of our city and region.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to attend. With your support, this Retrospective project will continue to make a positive impact to our community and further define the Pacific Northwest as a modern success story on the quality of here.
