“Evoke – Reveal – Explore – Acknowledge
Lecture Series

We are excited to announce an upcoming stop on our sojourn, the Pacific Northwest Design – A Retrospective project.  September 9, 2005 will mark the opening lecture of a four-part lecture series which aims to launch an exchange of ideas on the uniqueness of this place – of this landscape.

We are fortunate to have Thomas Hacker, FAIA to pilot the September 9, 2005 opening event - to evoke the examination of where land touches form… is there a Pacific Northwest Style?  Mr. Hacker is nationally recognized for his award winning designs of university buildings, libraries, museums, theaters, and other public buildings which have been widely published and exhibited.

As things are all a matter of perspective, who better than Allan Mandell, Garden Photographer to delight audiences through his reveal of “seeing” public and private Pacific Northwest gardens on November 11, 2005.  Mr. Mandell is a professional garden photographer whose works have been published in major magazines in the US, Canada and Europe.

Moving up in scale for review in foresight and hindsight, on January 20, 2006, we will explore the Urban Park & Greenspace Theory & Policy – a casting of the Pacific Northwest future with Mike Houck of the Urban Greenspaces Institute.  Mr. Houck, Executive Director of Urban Greenspaces Institute and founder of the Urban Naturalist Program at the Audubon Society of Portland has been a leader at all levels in urban park and greenspace issues.

Rounding the series out, we take pause on March 10, 2006 to acknowledge the “designer family tree” for the Pacific Northwest - the breadth and depth of the talent that has impacted our and landscapes.  How many degrees of separation are there?  Who are the designers, teachers, mentors that have influenced our practitioners today?  Jerry Diethelm, Professor Emeritus UO, will engage the design community in a mapping of our design pedigree – from whom do we come?  Mr. Diethelm is a landscape architect and architect.  He has studied and worked with Hideo Sasaki, Kevin Lynch, and Richard Haag and has recently retired from UO where he taught for 35 years.

All lectures are free and open to the public and will convene at 5:00– 7:00pm at Pratt & Larson Building, Slab Room at 1204 SE Water, Portland, Oregon.  For more information, please contact P. Annie Kirk at aredbird@comcast.net or 503.887.3439.
