The Japanese Garden sits perched on a hill above the Rose Garden in Washington Park, Portland. Many of us have been there. We’ve taken family there for a visit or explored the area when we first moved to the region. But the gardens, like all gardens, are not static artifacts but dynamic growing, blooming, changing, meditative, educational, and inspirational places in our city. They teach us about traditional Japanese garden design, elements of which are woven into our hybrid and multi-cultural spaces here in North America – both private and public. They are literally rooted in the physical environment blending water, rock, and vegetation with careful and intentional detail. They manage one of the most elegant and ancient paradoxes in landscapes – being both intensely cultivated and natural simultaneously.

ASLA Oregon has the great opportunity to tour the gardens with the Garden Curator of the Portland Japanese Garden, Sadafumi Uchiyama, ASLA. He is a 3rd generation Japanese gardener and now guides the activities at our beloved Japanese gardens.

The tour will take place at noon on August 16th 2013. Sign-up for the tour is limited to 30 people. The first 15 are guaranteed to take the tour with Mr. Uchiyama. The tours may combine or a 2nd tour will be led simultaneously by Desirae Williams, LAIT, Mr. Uchiyama’s assistant.
