Prior to this, Michael was Professor of Practice at the University of Oregon where he founded the Fuller Initiative Land Lab, an award-winning and internationally recognized model of design research, education, and service. Michael received a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Virginia and a B.S. in Geography from the University of Oregon. He has professional experience working on public urban landscapes, landscapes on structure, and green infrastructure following a previous career in horticulture and restoration contracting.
McCormick and Baxter Creosoting Company was the first industrial property in the Portland Harbor to be designated a superfund site and remediated. The project was completed in 2006 using best management practices and included a large restoration planting of native riparian forest, savanna, and prairie. Twenty years later, we are able to evaluate the performance of the project to inform future remediation plans for the Portland Harbor. In negotiating a potential purchaser agreement for the property, the Portland Botanical Gardens recently performed a botanical survey of the restoration and will be presenting their findings to ASLA
