This position resides in the Parks Planning office, which is responsible for system-wide planning, land acquisition, park renovations, new park design and development, and trail planning and design. The Landscape Designer is typically responsible for all aspects of project management for small to mid-size projects such as playground renovations, sport court repair, trail reconstruction, sidewalk replacement, fencing, gates, and site furnishing installation. The Landscape Designer also often assists on larger scale projects under the guidance of a Landscape Architect or Principal Landscape Architect.

Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in landscape architecture or a closely related field.

Experience:
One year of experience in planning, landscape design, computer-aided drafting, parks maintenance, landscape construction, or related activities.

In-person Senior Designer at Ground Studio (Monterey)

POSITION OVERVIEW:

This position is an opportunity for a highly motivated, engaged designer to be a thought partner on compelling design projects in a collaborative studio, while building their technical acumen through thoughtful work on landscapes at a variety of scales, phases, and typologies in some of the most beautiful locations in the world.

We are seeking a practiced and ambitious individual to join us in our Monterey studio as a Senior Designer.

The ideal candidate:

• Is highly creative, with a keen design sense and passion for creating beautiful, sophisticated landscapes.
• Shares our philosophy that environmental stewardship, regenerative design/construction, and unparalleled aesthetics are tantamount.
• Has extraordinary technical skills and is equally at home working as part of a dynamic, collaborative project team or independently on self-directed tasks.
• Has managed teams through all phases of design, documentation, and construction and approach their work with rigor, integrity, and professionalism.

This is a full-time in-person position in our Monterey studio with a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Senior Designers guide project teams through the oversight and direction of Project Managers in the typical studio process. The focus of this role is to provide inspiration, guidance, and oversight for project design and process for Project Managers.

• Exemplify the Ground Studio philosophy and core values to project teams, both internal and external
• Be a support for Partners by attending early design/site meetings and capturing big-picture ideas to inform the project story
• Develop a project story document and communicate the vision to Project Manager and Design Staff for the project
• Provide regular updates to Partners regarding project status and needs
• Coordinate with all Project Managers on project budgets and report to Partners on progress and updates regularly
• Present to project teams when needed in collaboration with or on behalf of Partners
• Be thoroughly versed in Project Workflow and Project Manager job description and be able to guide Project Managers in Ground Studio standards
• Guidance for Project Managers, including:
o Design direction
o Priority setting
o Encouraging responsiveness to the entire project team
o Setting expectations for professional conduct
o Seeking closure and completeness, with daily efficiency
o Communicating clear expectations of all deliverables

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture or Architecture
• Licensed Landscape Architect (California license preferred, but not required)
• Currently authorized to work in the US without the need for a visa sponsorship now or in the future
• A minimum of 10 years in a high-level design leadership position at a comparable firm
• Possesses a knowledge of California Native and Mediterranean plants and planting design.
• Training in horticulture and an awareness of industry best practices regarding planting is a plus.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead landscape architecture projects from conceptual design through construction administration, including management of sub-consultants and production staff
• Assume responsibility (with support) for the production, organization, coordination, and accuracy of all presentations and documents
• Exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of duties
• Lead multiple projects in various stages of development simultaneously and work cooperatively with the principal team to ensure design integrity and graphic consistency
• Communicate with and coordinate the efforts of project team members, clients, consultants, contractors, and agency officials
• Manage project schedule, and workflow, and anticipate required staff resources
• Review project budgets, communicate project progress to the Business Administration team
• Work with the project team to produce presentation materials for client and agency presentations
• Research and specify materials, products, and systems
• Attend job-site meetings in person. Issue supplemental instructions, and review submittals and shop drawings during the Construction Administration phase
• Coach and mentor junior staff, share experiences and lessons learned to increase the firm’s common knowledge
