Founded in 2022, Understory Landscape Architecture is a women-owned firm focused on developing high-quality, meaningful landscapes throughout the Pacific Northwest. We are a mission-based firm that believes in the importance of storytelling, human experience, and our impact on the environment. We develop site-specific design concepts for each project that carry through from early conceptual design to construction detailing. We have a wide range of projects including public parks, affordable housing, and non profit organizations.

The Opportunity
This position is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of an emerging firm’s design culture and processes. We are looking for someone who has a desire to be involved in all aspects of Understory’s projects from concept development to construction observation and is motivated to advance in their career quickly. You would be a good fit for this position if you are curious, have an enthusiasm for design, are self motivated, and have strong technical skills. Although all of our team members contribute to all phases of design, we are looking for someone who excels in the technical phases of projects. You should have the ability to immediately contribute to work in all phases of projects including, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration. Prior experience producing design development and construction document sets and coordinating with consultants in other disciplines is required. The ideal candidate will have excellent technical documentation skills including construction detailing, grading, irrigation design, and experience writing technical specifications. The position will involve remote collaboration. The ability to work independently, self-edit work, and command a high level of accuracy is required.

The position requires a degree in landscape architecture from an accredited university (BLA or MLA) and a minimum of four years of experience working as a landscape architect/landscape designer. Professional experience using AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam, Google and Microsoft programs and developing 3D models (Sketchup or Rhino) and renderings for design studies and presentation graphics is required.

This position will be full-time (40 hours a week) and located in Bend Oregon. We are a hybrid office and work in person together 2-3 days per week. We value work-life balance and support flexible schedules.

Requirements

This position resides in the Parks Planning office, which is responsible for system-wide planning, land acquisition, park renovations, new park design and development, and trail planning and design. The Landscape Designer is typically responsible for all aspects of project management for small to mid-size projects such as playground renovations, sport court repair, trail reconstruction, sidewalk replacement, fencing, gates, and site furnishing installation. The Landscape Designer also often assists on larger scale projects under the guidance of a Landscape Architect or Principal Landscape Architect.

Training:

We are seeking a practiced and ambitious individual to join us in our Monterey studio as a Senior Designer.

The ideal candidate:

• Is highly creative, with a keen design sense and passion for creating beautiful, sophisticated landscapes.
• Shares our philosophy that environmental stewardship, regenerative design/construction, and unparalleled aesthetics are tantamount.
• Has extraordinary technical skills and is equally at home working as part of a dynamic, collaborative project team or independently on self-directed tasks.
• Has managed teams through all phases of design, documentation, and construction and approach their work with rigor, integrity, and professionalism.

This is a full-time in-person position in our Monterey studio with a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead multiple projects in various stages of development simultaneously and work cooperatively with the principal team to ensure design integrity and graphic consistency

• Review project budgets, communicate project progress to the Business Administration team
• Work with the project team to produce presentation materials for client and agency presentations

• Attend job-site meetings in person. Issue supplemental instructions, and review submittals and shop drawings during the Construction Administration phase
• Coach and mentor junior staff, share experiences and lessons learned to increase the firm’s common knowledge
